Formula
3 stars from 19 countries to race at Zandvoort, August 10 and 11
STRONG INTERNATIONAL
ENTRY LIST FOR MARLBORO MASTERS 2002
Zandvoort, July
17, 2002 - No less than 50 drivers from 19 countries, including as much
as five Dutch drivers, have been entered for participation in the Marlboro
Masters of Formula 3 at Circuit Park Zandvoort, August 10 and 11. Never
before has such a large contingent of Dutch drivers been entered for participation
in the world's most important Formula 3 race. Among the competitors are
several top drivers from the British, German and French Formula 3 series,
the event living up to its reputation as the place to spot future Formula
1 talents.
The status that the
Marlboro Masters is being underlined by the fact that on the second week-end
of August, nowhere else a Formula 3 race is taking place. Thus, all teams
and drivers have the opportunity to race at Zandvoort. And many of them
do so, as is clearly proven by the large number of competitors that has
registered for this year's event.
Australian James Courtney
(Carlin Motorsport) is currently leading the points' standings of the
British championship. Other leading drivers from the British series include
Irishman Michael Keohane (Carlin Motorsport), French driver Bruce Jouanny
(Promatecme F3), Brits Robbie Kerr (Alan Docking Racing) and Mark Taylor
(Manor Motorsport), all of them already having won races this season.
BSR-team mates Frank Diefenbacher and Bernhard Auinger are the best-placed
participants from the German championship taking part at the Masters.
Other notable drivers include Japanese Kousuke Matsuura, racing for the
Prema Powerteam. French championship leader Renaud Derlot (Signature)
is being joined by experienced drivers such as Tristan Gommendy (ASM)
and Bruno Besson (Serge Saulnier). Tatsuya Kataoka has won a round of
the Japanese F3-championship already and is driving for the Swiss Racing
team at Zandvoort. Mattieu Zangarelli (Signature), also competing in this
championship, will come to Zandvoort as well.
This year, a record
contingent of Dutch drivers is taking part at the Marlboro Masters. Jeroen
Bleekemolen (Team Avanti) is making his come-back to the category especially
for the event, while Stefan de Groot (JB Motorsport), Robert Doornbos
(Team Ghinzani) and Charles Zwolsman (Team Kolles) are regular competitors
in the German championship. During the Masters, De Groot will be racing
in Marlboro-colours. Furthermore, Jaap van Lagen will be making his Formula
3-debut at the Marlboro Masters with Dutch team Van Amersfoort Racing.
He is dominating in Formula Ford this season and will both be racing in
Formula Ford and Formula 3 at Zandvoort.
In timed practice
on Saturday, drivers will attempt to qualify for participation in the
race on Sunday. Qualification has been split up into two groups with even
and odd starting numbers. Qualification will already be an exciting affair,
as only the 37 fastest drivers will make it into the race. One more reason
not to miss any of the action on Saturday as well!
